Abstract
688,998. Tubular electric furnaces. NEEDLE INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1951 [Jan. 3, 1951], No. 205/51. Class 39(iii) [Also in Group II] Metal articles, e.g. needles to be heattreated are fed into the upper end of an inclined tube 10 which is vibrated and heated by passage of current therethrough, and the articles heated by passage through the tube fall at its lower end through a tubular shield 31 into quenching liquid. The tube 10 is free from bends and internal projections and is electrically connected at its lower end to a larger metal tube 11 around the tube 10 so as to leave an annular space between the tubes, to which current is supplied by connections 26 at their upper ends so that current passes through the tubes. The inner tube 10 is of nickel chrome alloy and is supported by spaced insulators 19 from the outer tube so as to be free to expand longitudinally relatively to the outer tube 11. The inner tube 10 may taper towards the delivery end, where it is connected to the outer tube 11, which is tapered at its lower end 13. The lower parts of both tubes are cut away at their lower ends to form a delivery opening 15, the edges of the metal tubes being electrically connected at the delivery lip 16 so formed, which thus receives more heat. The ends of the tubes 10, 11 are preferably connected around their entire peripheries at the lower end. Powdered insulation 20, 25 is placed in the annular space between the tubes 10, 11 and in the space between the outer tube 11 and an outermost cylindrical shroud 24 supported on the tube 11 at one end by a circular plate 14 and at the other end by a flexible metal diaphragm 21 welded to the tube 11 at 22. The shroud 24 is insulated from the tubes by insulating rings 23. The furnace is supported from below upon vertical leaf springs, one of which carries an armature and is vibrated by a solenoid vibrator. The outer tube 11 may be of the same metal and resistance as the inner tube 10, or may be of metal of lower resistance or one having a low coefficient of expansion.
