Abstract

1,015,270. Vacuum furnace resistance heating elements. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Aug. 26, 1963 [Aug. 27, 1962], No. 33717/03. Heading H5H. A heating element for an electric furnace comprises one or more mesh-like members such as 1, 3, 5 made of a number of interlinked helices (see Fig. 3) of refractory metal wires; for example molybdenum, tantalum, rhenium, columbium but preferably tungsten. The mesh-like members 1, 3, 5 and electrically connected together at one end by inner and outer rings 16, 15 of a metal similar to that of the wires in the mesh together with members 17 between the ends of the mesh-like members. Connection to the element from say a threephase A.C. supply is by connectors 19, 21, 23 held in water-cooled holders, the connectors also forming the support for the heating element. The connectors are formed of inner portions 39 secured to the mesh by welding and to each other by a wire binding 33 and outer portions 11 secured to the inner portions 39 and to each other by a wire binding 27 together with a mesh supporting band 37. Each mesh may comprise a number of parallel arranged portions.
