Abstract
874,757. Electric resistance heaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 25, 1957 [Aug. 24, 1956], No. 25964/56. Class 39(3). An electric heater comprises an aluminium alloy tube 1 having a continuous dense anodised insulating film 5 on its interior surface which is in intimate contact with a helical resistance ribbon 2 the ends of which are secured to cylindrical brass terminal blocks 4 which close the ends of and are insulated from the tube 1 which may have heat transfer fins 8. A sprayed aluminium oxide film, which can also be applied to the radially outer face 7 of the ribbon 2, may replace the anodised film 5 and in this case the tube 1 may be of a metal such as stainless steel. A tubular resistance element may replace the ribbon 2 (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification, Fig. 4, having a central heating passage 32 for a fluid, a tubular resistance 31 is held at its ends by terminal assemblies 33 each comprising inner and outer annular brass blocks 34, 35 which are insulated from and support an inner tube 40, having an insulating aluminium oxide film 44 on its outer surface, and an outer tube 41, having an aluminium oxide film 45 on its inner surface, both films being in intimate contact with the element 31.
