Abstract
1,029,197. Electrodes for glass furnaces. SIEMENS SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 20, 1963 [Aug. 25, 1962], No. 32986/63. Heading H5H. In a glass melting furnace a U-shaped electrode 11 of molybdenum or tungsten is held in the wall 13 of the furnace by water-cooled holders 12, the ends of the electrode receiving current from the secondary winding of a variable ratio transformer 14. In operation the U- shaped electrode first functions as a resistance heater to heat the glass during which stage no current flows through the glass. Thereafter the heating of the glass is continued by current flowing through the glass from one leg to the other of the electrode. A plurality of U-shaped electrodes may be used which during the latter heating stage have alternate electrodes connected to the same supply terminal.
