925,508. Electric coils. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 21, 1959 [May 23, 1958], No. 16742/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 35. [Also in Group XL (a)] Apparatus for producing a magnetic field of high intensity comprises an electrical solenoidal conductor winding of aluminium which has been purified to produce a very high conductivity and means for circulating a very low temperature coolant along or around the conductor to maintain it at a low temperature. The aluminium may be purified by zone refining and may be cooled by helium cooled to liquid hydrogen temperatures. The conductor may be hollow with the coolant passing through it, or may be in the form of sleeving around ducting of material of greater mechanical strength such as commercial aluminium. Alternatively the conductor may be in the form of a solid rod or rods secured to ducting carrying the coolant. The conductor may be a toroidal winding surrounding a toroidal thermonuclear reactor.
