Abstract
1,011,231. Induction heating. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Dec. 28, 1962 [Jan. 9, 1962], No. 790/62. Heading H5H. Apparatus for the levitation melting of conductive materials 20, by induction heating, comprises two cylindrical coils 1, 2, positioned coaxially end to end and connected in opposition to a source of R.F. current, and a pair of conductive, hollow bodies 7, 15, one supported within each coil, and having inner surfaces shaped to produce the desired field configuration. As shown, copper blocks 7, 15 are supported by an end section of coil 2 projecting into recess 8, and a turn of coil 1, respectively, and are separated by a gap or an insulating annulus 13. Each block 7, 15 is formed with a longitudinal slit 11, 16 or comprises a number of spaced, radial segments or may comprise laminations separated by insulating material, to prevent circulation of eddy currents. Coil 2 may be spaced from block 7, or may contact insulating coating 12, but in any event coils 1, 2 and blocks 7, 15 form a self-supporting structure. Coils 1, 2 are hollow for circulation of coolant. The apparatus may be used for vacuum deposition of an alloy and may replace the heating coil and crucible of the apparatus described in Specification 942,549.
