Abstract
1,111,102. Electromagnetic forming. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. 24 Jan., 1966 [2 Feb., 1965], No. 3056/66. Heading B3Q. A coil assembly for electromagnetic forming apparatus comprises a body (10), Fig. 3, of electrically conductive material having an opening (51) for a workpiece to be formed and an internal bore (22) to receive and support the forming coil (24) in insulation (38), e.g. resinimpregnated glass fibre. The bore (22) is formed in the copper or copper-beryllium body (10) by providing grooves (32) in the contacting faces of two halves of the body, which are held together by bolts (28). The body (10) may be shaped to concentrate the magnetic field, or a separate, split shaper (18) may be used the halves of which are insulated from each other and the body (10) by thermosetting resin. Similar insulation is disposed in a slot (20) in the body (10), which is prevented from opening by tie-rods (53). The forming coil (24) may be solid or hollow for the passage of coolant, one end of the coil being connected to a bank of condensers while the other is connected to the earthed body (10). In another form, Fig. 4 (not shown), the conductor (64) of the forming coil is of rectangular cross-section and the body (10) has a conical central opening. In a further form, Fig. 5 (not shown), the body is made of five laminations (68) and the forming coil is cylindrical.
