Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A magnetic metal forming device comprises an electric transformer having its primary winding formed by a coiled strip conductor 14 and a plurality of secondary windings formed by conductive strips 17 arranged between the primary turns 14 and connected to supply current in parallel to the annual slotted flux concentrator 12 which surrounds the workpiece 34. A heavy current pulse in the primary winding, which may be produced by closing a switch connecting the primary to a charged capacitor bank (Fig. 4, not shown), produces heavy current pulses in each secondary strip 17 which flow through base plate 21 and flange 25 along one surface of the slot of the flux concentrator 12 and round inner surface 36 thereof to produce a high intensity magnetic field in the work space sufficient to effect a reduction in diameter of workpiece 34. An alternative form of transformer for supplying heavy currents is described (see Division H1). Specification 896,923 is referred to.
