Abstract
962,883. Stamping. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1963 [Feb. 6, 1962], No. 3897/63. Heading B3Q. A magnetic forming apparatus comprises a shaped conductor and a flat, composite mounting bracket which includes first and second outer layers of conductive material, means for coupling one end of the conductor to the first outer layer and means for coupling the second outer layer to the other end of the conductor and a layer of insulating material disposed between said outer layers. A conductor assembly 8 is positioned in a clamping device 10 fixedly mounted on a work surface 12 of a cabinet (not shown). The clamping device comprises a mounting block 24 of insulating material having high voltage and earth inserts 34, 38 therein, attached to the work surface 12, conductive strips 42, 66 and a stationary member 50 of e.g. brass secured to the block in contact with the earth insert 38 and having a clamping screw 72. A vertically extending movable member 62 of insulating material is disposed in the hollow centre of the member 50 and partially surrounds the resilient beryllium copper strip 66. The conductor assembly which is shaped according to the operation to be formed, e.g. to reduce the cross-section of a tubular workpiece, comprises a solenoid-shaped conductor 78 surrounded by insulating material e.g. fibre glass, within an annular housing 82, a flux concentrating means 86 having a central workpiece aperture 88 and slot 84 positioned within the housing and a vertically extending laminated bracket 94 having a thick outer layer 98 of brass by which it is attached to the housing easing. The bracket is located in the clamping device by a pin 100 locating in a vertically extending slot 102 in the wall of the device. The upper end portion 104 of the conductor 78 extends horizontally along the inner face of the layer 98 and is insulated therefrom by insulating material 106 and soldered to the upper end of a conductive strip 108 disposed between members 110, 112 which are retained in position on the bracket by insulating material layers 114, 116. The contact member 112 extends beyond the outer face of the member 116 and abuts the resilient conductor 66 upon clamping to complete the high voltage circuit. Specification 896,923 is referred to.
