Abstract

1,129,499. Flameproof multiple contact plug and socket connector. FOXBORO CO. 7 Dec., 1966 [13 Dec., 1965], No. 54750/66. Heading H2E. A multiple contact plug and socket electrical connector, suitable for use in explosive atmospheres, comprises a sleeve 36 in threaded engagement with housings 25 and 32 which respectively carry a plug 30 and a socket 31, and magnetically operated reed switches 12 which are connected on one side to the conductors of a cable 10 and on the other to pins 27 on plug 30, and a pivoted U-shaped bracket which carries a permanent magnet to close the reed switches after the plug and socket are engaged. Right-hand and left-hand screwthreads at opposite ends of the internal surface of the sleeve 36 co-operate with external threads on the housings 25 and 32 so that rotation of the sleeve 36 in opposite directions causes the housings to move apart or come together. Polarizing of the contact housings 25 and 32 is effected by a pin 35 on housing 25 engaging a hole in housing 32. The connector is mounted on a supporting body by means of a threaded member 37, the latter also carrying an apertured plate 16, Fig. 4 (not shown), on which is pivotally mounted the bracket carrying the permanent magnet. Cables 10 and 11 are clamped to the connector in such a way as to render the interior of the connector flameproof and the space surrounding the wires 26 and 28 is usually filled with epoxy resin.
