Abstract

854,869. Nuclear fusion reactors; discharge apparatus. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Oct. 20, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1957], No. 33371/58. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). Plasma discharge apparatus comprises means for producing a tubular plasma discharge and means for establishing a control magnetic field within the tubular discharge in opposition to its self-induced magnetic field so that the control field tends to urge the plasma outwardly in opposition to the constrictive effect of the selfinduced field. The apparatus may comprise an insulating cylinder 11 provided at its ends with metallic electrode 12, 13 which are connected to a pulsed D.C. supply 21 to establish a tubular plasma discharge. A central conductor 22 surrounded by an insulator 23 is situated along the axis and is connected to a second pulsed D.C. supply 24 which may operate at the same frequency, the current through conductor 22 being -in the opposite direction to the current through the discharge so that its magnetic field is opposed to that of the discharge. The cylinder 11 is connected to a gas supply and to a pump so that it may be filled with a desired gas, e.g. deuterium, at a desired pressure.
