Abstract

821,744. Discharge apparatus. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. May 30, 1957 [June 6, 1956], No. 17156/57. Class 39(1). A generator for producing a shaped plasma comprises electrodes in the form of a pair of titanium rods 12 and 13 in which gas is occluded extending at an angle to each other through, and terminating flush with the face 14 of, a ceramic or other insulating disc 11. The electrodes 12 and 13 are secured by connectors 18 and 19 to strip-shaped conductors 16 and 17 between which is disposed an insulating sheet 21. A liquid insulating material is poured around the elements to form a cylinder 22 fixed to the disc 11 and the assembly is mounted in an evacuated chamber (not shown). The generator is connected to a conventional pulse circuit comprising a capacitor 34 which is charged through a resistor 32 by a d.c. power supply 31. A gaseous discharge tube 33 conducts in response to a pulse from a trigger pulse generator 36 and connects the capacitor 34 across the conductors 16 and 17. The resulting potential difference is sufficient to establish a curved discharge between the electrodes 12 and 13 thus releasing the occluded gas which is ionized to produce an arc discharge. The magnetic field, Fig. 3, is such as to produce a net force acting on the direction of the arrow F, and the plasma is expanded to the shape 37 shown in Fig. 1.
