Abstract

889,890. Thermonuclear apparatus. LINHART, J. G. Aug. 31, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 30009/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4) A method of producing energy by nuclear fusion comprises evacuating to a high degree a cylindrical reaction chamber, introducing a gas- or mixture of gases into the chamber through orifices in the curved wall of the chamber, and subjecting the gas to an electrical discharge across the ends of the reactor in a direction parallel to its axis. The chamber may comprise in insulating cylinder provided with a plurality of small radial orifices and closed at each end by circular electrodes. The chamber is evacuated to a pressure of 10<SP>-6</SP>mm and gas such as a mixture of deuterium and tritium, which may be previously ionised, is fed to the chamber through the orifices. A high voltage source, for example of about 10 kilovolts, is applied to the electrodes to produce a discharge in the chamber
