Abstract

874,381. Nuclear fusion reactors. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. March 26, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 10541/59. Class 39(4). A pinch device comprises means for establishing a high density plasma between electrodes so that the plasma is constricted by its magnetic field, and means for producing magnetic fields near the electrodes to prevent constriction of the discharge at its ends. In Fig. 1 a discharge is established between two electrodes 13, 14, one of which is an electronemitting cathode, by a pulsed power supply; a gas supply and a pump are connected to the discharge chamber so that it may be filled with a desired gas at a desired pressure, the gas being converted into a plasma by the discharge. At each end of the chamber is a coil 26, 27 which produces a magnetic field strong enough to prevent constriction of the discharge at its ends; this reduces some causes of instability in the discharge and reduces the current concentration at the cathode.
