Abstract

950,044. Cut-outs. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept. 17, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1961], No. 35258/62. Heading H2G. A device for rapidly interrupting a heavy current (the supply for a heating coil in a plasma research reactor) consists of a strip of aluminium (or copper or silver) foil 45 carrying the current, the foil having a hole 47 located above the end of a solenoid 34. The solenoid can be energized from a high energy source 61 through a thyratron 63, and the resulting rapid rise in magnetic field disrupts the foil 45 and so interrupts the main current. The solenoid 34 and the metal rods 23, 25 over which the foil is stretched are moulded into a plastics block. Nine alternative materials are suggested. Specifications 844,291, 850,821 and 866,544 are referred to.
