Abstract

979,890. Transformers. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Nov. 6, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962], No. 30585/62. Heading H1T. A superconducting transformer has its windings 1, 2 made of a superconductive material which is not shifted out of the superconductive state by the fields produced by currents in the windings, the windings being enclosed in a shield 3 of similar superconductive material to minimise flux leakage and the whole being maintained at the necessary low temperature. The apparatus may be immersed in liquid helium at one atmosphere pressure. There is no solid magnetic core but part of the flux path may be occupied by a solid medium instead of the liquid helium. The shield 3 may be a cylinder formed from a strip of superconductive material coated on one side with insulating material. The superconductive material used may be plastically strained niobium, cold worked niobium-zirconium alloy or niobium tin compound.
