Abstract
875,487. Multi-gap cold-cathode tubes. MULLARD Ltd. May 7, 1958 [July 26, 1957], No. 23754/57. Class 39(1). In a cold-cathode stepping tube as described in Specification 875,484 comprising a central disc-shaped electrode surrounded by a circular row of rod-shaped outer electrodes and at least one marker electrode so arranged that the breakdown voltage between the central electrode and the marker electrode is greater than that between the central electrode and the said outer electrodes, the said marker electrode is positioned a greater distance from the central electrode than-are any of the said outer electrodes and has a discharge surface so disposed that a first portion of the said surface is nearer to a first selected one of said outer electrodes than to any other electrode and a second portion of the said surface is nearer to a second selected one of said outer electrodes than to any other electrode. In one arrangement, Figs. 3 and 6, the tube comprises a central circular anode (not 'shown) surrounded by a circular row of main cathodes and first and second guide cathodes of which only first guide cathodes GA 9 , GA 0 , and second guide cathode GB 9 are shown. The marker or zero main cathode K 0 is disposed outside the circular row of cathodes and comprises two portions 1 and 2 each having a configuration similar to the other guides and cathodes, which portions are connected together, e.g. by a spot weld 8 below a ceramicspacer S. Portion 1 of K 0 is much nearer to GB 9 than to GA 9 so that the negative voltage to which K 0 must be returned when operating the tube is as uncritical as possible. Portion 2 of K 0 is spaced from GA 0 by the normal spacing between the electrodes in the circular row, so the tube is stable in use. Figs. 7 and 8 show alternative forms of the zero cathode K 0 . In Fig. 7 the L-shaped cathode has a vertical portion 4 and a horizontal portion 3 extending towards the electrode GB 9 . In Fig. 8 the cathode comprises a vertical rod 6 to which is welded a plate 5 which extends towards GB 9 .
