Abstract

862,060. Cardboard boxes and trays. ASHTON CONTAINERS Ltd. July 16, 1959 [July 18, 1958], No. 23045/58. Class 18. A box, which may be made of double-faced corrugated board, is folded from the blank shown in Fig. 1 and has tongues 19, 48, Fig. 2, which engage openings 27 in the base of another box stacked thereon. In some circumstances only a single tongue or only a pair of tongues may be provided. When folding the box, as shown in Fig. 2, extensions 12, 13 on wall 5 lie against side walls 2, 4 and tongues 48, 49 on the extensions engage slits formed by bending the walls 2, 4 about fold lines 14, 15, the slits being formed around tongues 16, 19 which extend alongside the tongues 49, 48 respectively. Portions 20, 21 on panels 6, 8 on each side engage the openings 27 in the base panel thereby securing the extensions 12, 13 between the walls 2, 4 and their respective extensions. The end walls 3, 5 carry panels 7, 9 which are folded inwardly and carry portions 38 which interlock with cut-outs 34 on the panels 6, 8 of the sides. Hand holes 57, 58 are provided in the end walls. The openings 27, (see Fig. 8) have cuts 54, 55 so that a portion 56 projects downwards from each side wall to facilitate stacking. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, the extensions 12, 13 are replaced by gusset portions 61, creased centrally as shown having portions 62 engaging the slits formed round each tongue 16.
