850,671. Two-part couplings. LEWYT CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1958 [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 42210/58. Class 38(1) [Also in Group XXVIII] A vacuum cleaner pipe coupling comprises tubular sections 10, 11 Fig. 3 locked together by a ratchet toothed body 16 fixed to section 10 and a pawl assembly fixed to section 11 which comprises a resilient strip 25, 26 with a pawl 27 and a trip 20, 23 which is moved relative to the resilient strip 25 to flex the same and move the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet teeth. The section 10 is inserted in section 11 and is located by the part 15 engaging in an axial slot 19 in the section 11 so that the pawl 27 on the fixed strip 25 can ride up the face 17 and engage the teeth to retain the tapered sections 13, 14 in engagement. The pawl is released by moving portion 24 to axially slide the strip 20 so as to cause its forward end 23 to bear against the resilient portion 26 to lift the pawl. When thrust is withdrawn from the portion 24 the strip reverts to its original position due to the resilient cam action exerted by the portion 26. An electrical conducting path is made, when the sections are coupled, by a contact portion 34 which rides over the tube end 13 and insulating strip 30 to contact a strip conductor 31. The resilient contact 34 may be integral with the strip 31 or formed separately and held secured by an insulated rivet as shown in Fig. 5.
