Abstract
1,024,239. Quick action connectors. PYLE-NATIONAL CO. Nov. 19, 1964 [July 21, 1964], No. 47212/64. Heading H2E. Rapid engagement of contact members 23 and 18 is brought about by compressing a spring 51 until it contains sufficient energy to force a detent member 43 over an abutment 47, thus shooting the contact members 23 into engagement with the stationary, contact members 18. The spring 51 is compressed by progressively screwing a coupling sleeve 52 on to the shell member 59 carrying the contacts 18. The end 54 of the sleeve 52 is in contact with one end of the spring 51, the other end of the spring being forced against a washer 56 on an extension of the second shell member 11 carrying the contacts 23. After the detent means 43, which may be a garter spring, have been forced over the abutment 47 it lies against the portion 46, thus preventing accidental disengagement of the contact. The contacts are disengaged by screwing the coupling sleeve in the opposite direction, an abutment 57 on the coupling sleeve compressing the spring 51 against a washer 41 provided on the same extension 36 of the second shell. Again, when the spring 51 is sufficiently compressed, the detent member 43 is forced back over the abutment 47 and the contacts are rapidly disengaged. This rapid engagement method is said to prevent arcing and to be particularly useful for circuits of high voltage and high currents.
