Abstract
941,512. Two-part couplings. ELECTRONIC ASSOCIATES Inc. Aug. 24, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 32704/62. Heading H2E. A coaxial plug for a computer patchboard has the central contact surrounded by a spring- loaded sleeve which is retracted when connection is made. As shown, Fig. 1, an insulating body 24 carries a central contact 42 and a second contact 44 provided with cam surfaces 46, to which contacts are respectively connected to the inner and outer conductors 48, 50 of a coaxial cable. The central contact is surrounded by a spring-loaded sleeve 15 which is provided with metallic salts 20. When the plug is inserted into an aperture 12 in a panel 10, the balls prevent the insertion of the sleeve until the centre contact has been pushed forwards against the bias of the spring 49 to make contact with the spring contact 43. The balls descend the cam surfaces 46 and the sleeve enters the aperture as far as the stop 16. On releasing the insertion pressure the body is biased away from the panel causing the balls 20 to ride up the cam surfaces and press against the inside surface of the aperture 12, thus retaining the plug in position and also completing connection of the braid of the cable to the panel 10. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the ball bearings are replaced by S- shaped spring portions which are formed as part of the sleeve. The tip of the first contact in either embodiment may consist of a nylon cone to prevent accidental short circuiting of the contact with the panel, and a rubber or plastic sleeve 56 may cover the cable entry end of the plug.
