Abstract
1,117,805. Coaxial connectors combined with switches. AMP Inc. 19 Aug., 1966 [17 Sept., 1965], No. 37227/66. Heading H2E. [Also in Division H1] In a coaxial connector a resistor is either disconnected or connected between the inner and outer contacts by the insertion of a coaxial plug member. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the inner contact 15 has a pair of contact blades 20 aligned with an aperture 7 in an insulating plate 4 and is riveted to the underside of the plate. The outer contact 9 fits over a projection 6 on the upper surface of the plate 4, leg portions 11 embracing the sides of the plate, and is connected to a surrounding metal casing (2) (Fig. 4, not shown) by a bolt passing through a leg portion 11, the plate 4 and the casing (2). The contacts 9, 15 are linked by a resistor 43 through a switch 36. A tubular extension 28 on the inner contact 15 receives the inner conductor (29) of a coaxial cable and a metal ferrule (32) is crimped around the outer conductor (31) and insulation of the cable and connected to the casing (2) by a metal clamp. The switch 36 comprises a metal spring 40 carrying an insulating plate 42 located between the contact blades 20. Insertion of a coaxial plug deflects the plate 42 and disengages the spring 40 from the contact blades 20 or, alternatively, brings the spring 40 into engagement with an extension of one of the blades 20 (Fig. 8, not shown). The connector may be modified to form an adapter for receiving two coaxial plugs (Fig. 6, not shown). In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the switch comprises an insulating ball (57), located in an aperture in the outer contact (55), and a contact blade (58) which is moved out of engagement with the outer contact (55) by a mating plug whose outer contact depresses the ball (57). Ferrules extending from the inner and outer contacts (55, 65) are respectively crimped around the inner conductor (69) and the outer conductor and insulation of a cable (68).
