Abstract

1,036,170. Switched plugs; mechanical switches. AMP Inc. May 31, 1965 [June 15, 1964], No. 23006/65. Headings H2B and H2E. A plug for connection to a coaxial cable 21 incorporates a switch which is actuated, when the plug is inserted into an appropriate socket member, to connect the pin 26 with the inner conductor of the cable. The pin 26 is embedded in an insulating sleeve 28 in which is located an inner contact member 32 crimped at 32a to the inner conductor 21d and having contact fingers 32d. When the plug is inserted into a socket, spring fingers 24e act through insulating balls 34 to move the fingers 32d into contact with the inner end 26c of the pin. The contact fingers may be shaped in various ways, Figs. 5a-5c and 6A and 6B (not shown), to produce a wiping action, and the balls 34 may be replaced by insulating blocks, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), formed integrally with the sleeve 28. Moreover, the pin may have a split extension, Fig. 9 (not shown), for engagement by the parts of the contact fingers receiving the balls 34. In an alternative arrangement Fig. 10 (not shown), the contact fingers are formed as extensions of the pin, and in another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), two leads may be crimped into separate ferrules each having a contact finger so that, on insertion of the plug, both leads are connected to the pin. The fingers 24e, Fig. 2, are pressed out of a metal sleeve 24 which is crimped at 24a around a ferrule 33 in turn crimped about an insert 33a placed beneath the braid of the cable. The sleeve 24 is slotted and may have dimples 24i, Fig. 1 (not shown), to locate it properly in the metal front panel of a plug-board. An outer insulating sleeve 22 has gripping grooves 22a. The plug may alternatively co-operate with a socket connector, Fig. 12 (not shown), connected to a further coaxial cable, and a plug may itself be formed with a socket connection at its other end, Fig. 13 (not shown), to act as an adapter.
