Abstract

589,656. Cable terminals. KING, A. C., and BATTERSBY, D. J. Sept. 22, 1944, No. 18085. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A device for connecting a cable to a terminal post or another cable comprises a contactmember having a part to make in-line engagement with the cableconductors and a part to make in-line contact with the terminal post or the other cable and provided with transverse means to engage the cable insulation, and an insulating cover wholly embracing the contactmember. A cruciform blank 62 of sheet metal has limbs 63, 64 formed into a groove and bent to provide pointed cable-embracing parts, Fig. 11, the limbs 66, 67 being formed into a groove and bent in the opposite direction and flared at 70 to facilitate engagement with a terminal post, and a struck-out tongue 68, or an integral tongue 78 makes contact with the cable conductors. Points 69 are provided on the limbs 63, 64 to engage the cable insulation 65. An insulating sleeve 71 covers the device completely. The connector may be made alternatively in two separate portions secured together, Figs. 14, 15 (not shown). A fuse, radio interference suppressor, or a spark-gap may be inserted between the two parts, Figs. 17, 18 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 4, the arms 42, 43 are dished to embrace a cable and have a tongue 45 to pierce the cable insulation. The central portion 48 is apertured at 49 and the zones between the portion 48 and the limbs have a longitudinal groove at 50 and transverse grooves 51, 52, 53, 54. When the blank is bent about the lines c it forms an apertured nose to engage a terminal post in-line with the connector axis, a portion for a terminal post at right angles to it and a cable embracing portion. The insulating sleeve is also apertured. An alternative form is made from an H-shaped blank, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown). In another modification, the cable-embracing portion is replaced by an arrowhead, Figs. 19, 23, 25 (not shown). The integral tongue may be replaced by a separate pin welded between the two parts, Figs. 16, 21 (not shown). Specification 431,557 is referred to.
