Abstract
954,625. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. Feb. 22, 1963 [March 14, 1962], No. 7240/63. Heading H2E. A plug for insertion in a plug-board aperture comprises a cylindrical sleeve, resilient means within the sleeve biasing a detent outwardly through an opening in the sleeve, and a longitudinally movable nose member so that forces tending to push the plug from the aperture effect engagement of the nose member with the resilient means and thus lock the detents in the openings and thus the plug in the aperture. As shown, the resilient means comprise a C-spring 12 having side arms 12a with detents 12b which are biased outwardly through slots 2g in sleeve 2 and a nose member 10 with an enlarged end 10c. Forward movement of the spring relative to the sleeve is prevented by shoulders 12d which engage ridge 2b in the sleeve. The inner adjacent edges of the detent portions 12b are oppositely laterally displaced, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the spring arms can be depressed inwardly to enable the plug to be initially inserted into the aperture. A conductor 6 is crimped into the sleeve and moulded within an insulating shroud 8, and makes electrical connection with a spring contact 14 via nose portion 2e (Fig. 7, not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the shoulders 12d are omitted allowing relative movement between the spring and sleeve so that the nose member locks the detents whether the plug is pushed or pulled from the aperture. The plug can only be withdrawn from the aperture by depression of .the detents 12b and not just by pulling the cable end of the plug as in the first embodiment.
