Abstract

965,900. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. July 26, 1963 [Aug. 21, 1962], No. 29656/63. Heading H2E. An electrical connector for mounting in a housing passageway 24 (Fig. 7), is provided with centring means comprising several resilient fingers 32 distributed around the connector, each finger being arcuate in longitudinal section, convex towards and touching the passageway wall and secured to the connector at one end, the other, free end being arranged to engage the connector. The fingers 32 are part of a metal sleeve 30 (Fig. 2, not shown), initially formed in an open U-section (Fig. 4, not shown), which is wrapped tightly around the barrel 10 of the connector and secured by means of tongues 40, on one arm of the U, which slot into an aperture 42, in the other arm, and are then folded back (Fig. 6, not shown). The connector is formed with a pin portion 12, separated from the barrel 10 by a tapered portion 14, and an enlarged collar terminated by an annular flange 16, ferrule portions 18, 22 being provided for the attachment of a cable cone and sheath. The barrel 10 has a projecting tongue 35 to lock the sleeve against movement, the sleeve having a dimple 44 (Fig. 1, not shown), for a similar purpose. The connector, with the sleeve attached, is assembled within the passage 24 of an insulating block B by insertion from the right-hand side. The connector is snapped into position, ears 34 of the sleeve engaging one side of a shoulder 27, formed in the passage, and the flange 16 engaging the other side. The fingers 32 are now forced by the pressure of the walls of the passage to engage the pin 12, biasing it towards a central position in the passage 24.
