Abstract

850,315. Combustion chambers. MOTORENWERKE MANNHEIM A.G. VORM. BENZ ABT. STAT. MOTORENBAU. April 18, 1957 [April 20, 1956], No. 12773/57. Class 7(3). The mouth of a precombustion chamber is formed by an insert 1 having a central orifice 2, through which the fuel jet is injected so that its envelope just touches the orifice wall 3, and outer passages 25 through which the bulk of the compressed air flows into the precombustion chamber, the insert being insulated by an air space 6 so that the temperature of the wall 3 of the orifice 2 is maintained between 450‹C. -and 650‹C., whilst that of the outer wall 5 of the insert and the precombustion chamber wall is maintained below 300‹C. The outer passages 25 are formed between ribs 4, Fig. 3, and in an air-cooled engine, Fig. 1, the precombustion chamber wall 12 is provided with cooling ribs 11 and situated in the cooling air stream. In a light metal cylinder head construction the insert 1 is seated on a shrunk-in ring 10 of heavy metal. In a watercooled engine, the insert and precombustion chamber are insulated by air spaces 6, 19 and 20.
