In a combustion chamber formed by separate portions 2, 3, of which the upper portion is insulated from the cylinder head by an air gap j, a fuel injector 4 injects the fuel against the wall of the port 2 at a small angle, the transfer passage 5 being substantially tangentially to a wall of the chamber. A heater plug 12 is arranged with its tip in the path of the fuel jet.
