884,791. Combustion chambers. MOTORENWERKE MANNHEIM A.G. Feb. 23, 1960 [June 16, 1959], No. 6341/60. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). In a fuel injection engine having a jet directed towards the inner duct 14 of a combustion chamber insert 3 which has outer ducts 11 separated by ribs and is insulated by an air gap 25, the ratio of the cross-sectional area of duct 14 to the sum of the cross-sections of the outer ducts 11 being between 1:1 and 1:10, the sum of the volumes of the combustion chamber 10 and inner and outer ducts divided by the sum of the cross-sections of the inner and outer ducts lies between 20 and 100, and the ratio of the cross-section of a constricted duct 15 to the cross-sections of the inner and outer ducts lies between 1:1 and 2:1. In an air-cooled engine the chamber 10 is provided with fins 32 and in a water-cooled engine the outer surface of the chamber has a cylindrical portion in sliding contact with the watercooled head.
