Abstract

650,334. Cooling cylinders. POBJOY, E. E., [known as POBJOY, E. B.], [Representative of POBJOY, D. R.] March 1, 1948, No. 6383. [Class 7 (ii)] A sealed chamber 4, partially filled with a liquid having a critical temperature lower than the operating temperature, surrounds the combustion chamber 12 in the arrangement shown, or the exhaust port and valve in a side-valve engine. The chamber 4, which has cooling ribs 8, is closed by a screwed-on cap 14 which is sweated to the valve guide. The liquid, which may be benzene, ethyl alcohol, ethyl chloride or toluene, is poured through a hole 17 which is afterwards plugged.
