Abstract

846,863. Gas burners. SALEM ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and COULTON, F. July 30, 1956 [July 29, 1955], No. 21917/55. Class 75(1). [Also in Group XII] T-shaped tubular burners extend through openings in a furnace walls 1 so that fuel and air discharge nozzles 5 spaced along the length of each of two opposite sides of the burner head direct flames in opposite directions across the inner surface of the furnace wall. The burner heads and stems may be located in a common plane or the stems may be in a common plane and the heads disposed at angles thereto. Each burner comprises a T-shaped gas manifold located within aT-shaped air manifold and the nozzles 5 are formed by coaxially arranged gas ducts 29 on the head of the gas manifold and air ducts 27 on the head of the air manifold. A partition 19 in the head of the gas manifold forms an auxiliary gas chamber 21 which supplies through ducts 40 a plurality of gas nozzles 38 provided on the top of the head of the air manifold at positions between the air and gas nozzles 5. The supply of gas to the auxiliary chamber 21 is controlled by a valve 33 on the end of a rod 35 which carries a second valve 31 controlling the flow of gas into the stem of the gas manifold, the valves being so arranged that one closes as the other opens. In a modified construction of burner for use with a low pressure gas supply the partition 19 and the gas nozzles 38 are not provided and the gas ducts 29 of the nozzles 5 terminate inside the air ducts 27 so that the air flow induces a gas flow. In another modification, the burner comprises a single T-shaped manifold which is supplied with gas and air at the outer end of the stem. A pipe may extend through the stem to supply gas only to nozzles located between the gas and air nozzles on the head of the burner.
