838,177. Making transformer and like cores. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Feb. 19, 1958 [April 16, 1957], No. 5457/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] A laminated core for a transformer or inductor coil 12 is made by bending the end of a magnetic strip into a rectangular or other closed loop, severing it from the strip, opening the ends of the loop and passing it around the coil, and then repeating the process, each loop being made sufficiently large to lie over the preceding loop. The loops or groups of loops are slid alternately round the coil from opposite ends so that the gaps between the loop ends are adjacent or near a continuous part of a loop. Two laminated core parts 13, 14 may be assembled round coil 12 and held in position by a metal band which encircles both parts and passes under ears 31, 32 on lugs 27, 28 projecting from a base plate 26. The transformer may be potted in resin or enclosed in a screening can. The process may be adapted to automatic machinery and high-speed production.
