The upper part of a tuyere block for an underfeed stoker is divided by vertical slots into laminations 8, small enlargements 10 of the slots forming rows of air inlets along and perpendicular to the slots, and a few larger air inlets 12 are formed in the non-laminated lower part 7 of the block. A main segment 7 of a tuyere block, supported by the wall 3a of the underfeed stoker and the casing 6 of the air-box surrounding it, has arms 11 at its lower front face co-operating with arms on adjacent segments 7 to form large air inlets 12. Ridges 9 on the sides of the segment 7 co-operate with ridges 9 on auxiliary segments 8 to form rows of small air inlets 10 at the upper part of the front face and at the top of the block. Lugs 16 at the lower front face of the segments 8 engage in recesses 17 in the uppermost arms 11, and the rear of the segments 8 are supported by a ledge 15 on the rear wings 13 of the main segment 7. A rod 20 passing through the segments 7 and 8 holds the assembled blocks together to form the tuyere blocks of the furnace. The upper parts of the segments 7 and 8 together are of less width than the rear wings 13 and arms 11 to allow for expansion.
