The mechanism and supports 13 of a travelling grate 2 are enclosed within the furnace brickwork or panels 16 secured to the steelwork supporting the brickwork. Air inlets 21 direct air on to the supporting frame members 13 of the grate so as to cool them. The inlets 20 may be replaced by louvred openings in the panelling 16, and the size of the inlets may be regulated. The air is drawn into the inlets 20 by natural or forced draught, or air may be blown through them.
