Abstract
823,927. Cable glands; access of moisture preventing; carrying cables through partitions. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Jan. 17, 1956 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 1398/55. Classes 36 and 38 (1). In order to prevent moisture entering a repeater housing the outer insulation of a cable C passing through a bore 1 in a bulkhead B is threaded as is the bore 1, a sealing ring 3 being provided externally of the bulkhead and secured thereto by a clamping plate 6. The ring 3 may be of rubber. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the screw thread on the cable is opened out where it passes through the sealing ring and clamping plate to provide a discontinuous leakage path or no thread provided on the cable where it passes through the ring, said part being tapered instead and co-operating with a tapered ring. The grooved section of the cable may alternatively (Fig. 3) be provided by an externallygrooved sleeve 12 moulded to the cable and stepped at 13 to provide the discontinuous leakage path.
