Abstract

806,576. Continuous-casting; rolling. HUNTER ENGINEERING CO. May 8, 1956 [June 20, 1955], No. 14238/56. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). In a method of continuous - casting, molten - metal is maintained in the bight between confronting, upwardly-moving, converging portions of roller-surfaces, the space for contact of the molten metal with said surfaces being restricted to between 5 and 15 degrees of the circumference of the rollers extending downwardly from the point of minimum-spacing of said surfaces, and cooling said surfaces to cause solidification of molten metal in contact therewith. Rolls 10 are supported in bearing-blocks 4, mounted in frames 1 and adjustably positioned therein by screws 7 and springs 9a. The rolls comprise shells 13, of, e.g., Cu, A1 and their alloys, steel, Fe, graphite, on cores 14, grooved for the passage of coolant, and are driven from a shaft through gearing 28. Alternatively, if it is desired to adjust the rolls for a range of cast-products of different thicknesses, a pair of drive-shafts may be connected to the roll-shafts through universal couplings. Extending upwardly into the converging space between the rolls is a series of ceramic nozzle-blocks defining a horizontal passage-way 37 and a narrow slit 38, or adjustably-positioned by jacks 31. A molten-metal supply-box 50 communicates with the passageway 37 through a conduit 48 and a port in one end-block 42, and has an overflow-spout 52, the height of which may be adjusted to facilitate the maintenance of the metal level in the roll-pass, preferably between the nozzle-tap and the plane passing through the axes of the rolls, for non-turbulent flow. The rolls may be coated when starting with a mould-release silicone. Conditions and results obtained when casting aluminium are set forth. The arrangement may be such that the rolls work the metal as it solidifies.
