Abstract
834,783. Continuous - casting machines. UNITED STEEL CO.'S Ltd. May 22, 1956 [May 26, 1955], No. 15243/55. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for determining the level of liquid-metal in a continuous-casting mould comprises an A.C.- energized transformer 17 surrounding the mould 1, whose secondary output voltage is indicative of the level 16 of the molten-metal and may be used to control the rate at which the casting is withdrawn by rollers 7. The control may be manual, from visual indications, or automatic, in which case the speed of rolls 7 or the rate of pouring may be varied through a servo-mechanism. The secondary winding voltage is preferably opposed by that from a third winding, so that only changes in voltage are indicated, and changes due to variation of temperature are compensated, the length and position of the two windings being such as to give a desired output characteristic. The mould 1 is of copper and is surrounded by a jacket 8 of austenitic steel, to which cooling water is supplied at 10 and removed at 15. The castmetal may be ferrous or non-ferrous.
