Abstract
856,424. Continuous - casting machines. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Feb. 8, 1957 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 36963/55. Class 83 (1). A continuous-casting apparatus comprises an enclosed space 21 between the mould 12 and a duct 15 for supplying molten metal, and means for adjusting the pressure in the space to control the rate of metal flow. The mould 12 is lubricated as in Specification 794,255, is supported on springs, as in Specifications 715,282 and 806,803, and is cooled by water flowing through pipes 23, 24. Nitrogen, argon or a reducing-gas is supplied by a pump 27 to the space 21, which is bounded by bellows 16, 17, and which has a leak 19 to atmosphere. Valves 28, 29 in the supplyline 26 and a bleed-line 30 are controlled by relays 31, 32, actuated by pressure-switches 41, 42. The switches 41, 42 are operated according to the level of metal in the mould, which allows one or both of two lines 35, 36 to release pressure in lines 38, 39, supplied with an inert or reducing-gas by a pump 37. Several moulds may be supplied from a common source.
