In a continuous casting machine means 5 for guiding and cooling the cast ingot or slab comprises guiding rolls 60 arranged in a framework 61 which also houses cooling nozzles 63 and is carried by a truck 72 and suspended therefrom by webs 64 welded to the framework 61. The cage may be vertically adjusted by screws 65 through borings in the webs 64 and also adjusted transversely to the truck axis. Further adjustment for alignment of the cage in the direction of movement of the truck may be obtained by a ratchet 85 secured by locking bolt 82. Following all necessary adjustments the truck may be clamped in position by four clamping devices 90. To permit an exchange of guide roll cage the locking bolt 82 is removed from its bearing, cooling water connections removed and clamping devices 90 release, the whole guiding means being withdrawn on the truck. The guiding means may be in the form of a number of articulated universally mounted sections with respect to the truck to permit flexibility in the event of excessive deflection of the casting and a number of casting guiding sets may be mounted on a turn-table and the guiding means itself may be provided with wheels.
