Abstract

1312403 Straightening BLAW-KNOX FOUNDRY & MILL MACHINERY Inc 16 July 1971 [5 Aug 1970] 33605/71 Heading B3E The upper and lower rolls of a straightening machine for beams can be set at any of a plurality of preset fixed locations so that different sized beams can be straightened. The upper rolls 71-73, Fig. 4, are mounted in a roll assembly 18 comprising block members 78, 78<SP>1</SP> and 78<SP>11</SP>, the block members 78 and 78<SP>1</SP> having three bearing receiving portions 76 and 76<SP>1</SP>. Each of the upper rolls is vertically adjustable and since the means for vertically adjusting each of the rolls is similar, only the adjusting means for roll 73 is described. An hydraulic cylinder 90, Fig. 5, mounted on a member 92, is biased upwardly to support the block members 78 via a member 86 and the roll 73 is adjusted vertically by movement of screw operated wedges 96 towards or away from each other. The horizontal position of the member 86 is determined by the relative position of a movable wedge 106 to a fixed wedge 108 and the upper roll assembly 18 is clamped to the main frame 14 by a wedge 113. The lower rolls 41-44 are mounted in block members 46, 48 mounted on a sled 60, the sled being vertically adjustable by means of wedges 120 and 122, Fig. 4. The sled 60 is locked on platform 62 by engagement of a wedge 144 with an opening 148 in the sled. The roll 72 is driven by a motor 150 via gear assembly 152 and shaft 154, the shaft being supported by a vertically adjustable collar. Similarly each of the rolls 71, 73 is driven by a motor 170 via a gear assembly 172 and a shaft, the motor and gears being mounted on a sled 180, Fig. 6, which is movable on an inclined surface 181 so as to accommodate movement of the roll from one bearing receiving position to another. Replacement of the upper and lower roll assemblies is effected by moving the assemblies along rails 35-37 on to a trolley 32. In other embodiments (Figs. 12-15) pinch rolls are placed on the entry side of the straightener.
