Abstract
804,876. Rotting. AETNA-STANDARD ENGINEERING CO. July 23, 1957 [Aug. 17 1956], No. 23284/57. Class 83 (4). A billet piercing mill having inclined rolls 1, 2 for rolling a billet over a mandrel 10 and means 14 for guiding the billet in the zone of the rolls is provided with an inlet table comprising a main portion 15 carrying a feed trough and an extension 70 projecting into close proximity to the mill guiding means and constituting the sole support for the billet between the inlet table and the mill. The rolls 1 and 2 are driven by shafts 3 and 4 through universal joints 5 and 6. Although the rolls may be adjusted horizontally to accommodate different sizes of billets and to produce different sizes of tubes, the pass line 12 remains fixed and the billet is guided at this elevation by shoes 14 supported by the mill frame 8. The inlet table comprises an elongated box girder formed by side plates 16 and top 17 and a bottom plate supporting a massive trough or guide 19 on which the billets B are supported and fed by a conventional pusher mechanism. At each end of the table, the side plates are cut away to receive an elevator unit 20, 21 each comprising vertical plates 23, inclined plates 24 and a horizontal portion 25 which is welded to the plates 16. A horizontal plate 27 extending transversely of the table and welded to the plates 23 is supported by slideways 29 carried on wedges 31 supported on horizontal tracks 34 on the base 35 of the elevator unit. The table 15 is raised or lowered by a simultaneous movement of the two wedges through nuts 37 and screws 39 of opposite hand coupled together at 45. The screws of the two elevators at opposite ends of the table are operated together through couplings 46, gearing 47, shafts 48 and a gearbox 49. After the adjustment of its height, the table may be locked to the elevators to prevent vibration or movement during rolling by hydraulic hold-down mechanisms, each comprising links 51 extending from the base 35 to a piston and cylinder assembly 56 welded to a vertical plate at the end of the elevator. A guide 60 arranged to engage the upper surfaces of the billets is mounted in bearings 61 and adapted to be raised and lowered by an hydraulic cylinder. The table extension 70 comprises a U- shaped trough welded to a pair of side plates 71 and a vertical rear plate which is bolted to the vertical plate 73 at the end of the main portion of the table. A guide member 79 upstanding from the mill frame 8 engages within a recess 80 of the extension. If necessary the billets may be additionally guided by a ring 85 carried by a stem 86 depending through the extension and anchored by a wedge 90, Fig. 7.
