Abstract
872,695. Casting machines. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. March 3, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 6801/58. Class 83 (1). In a method of vacuum casting a mould 24 is placed in a chamber 2 evacuated to a pressure less than 0.5 mm. of mercury, and a stream of molten metal delivered into said chamber, the pressure in said chamber causing the stream to be degasified and violently diverge into small droplets, which are confined and reformed into a stream and directed into said mould. The confining means consists of a collar 54 having a refractory insert 52. In a modification the chamber contains a number of moulds bottompoured from a central sprue. Alternatively the moulds may be mounted on a rotating table and brought in turn under the pouring stream.
