Abstract
897,074. Continuous casting - machines. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Oct. 12, 1960 [Oct. 13, 1959], No. 34901/60. Class 83 (1). In a continuous casting process molten metal is fed to the chill mould from a closed container by gas pressure, the fall of pressure due to lowering of the metal in the container being compensated for by measuring the issuing casting continuously or at short intervals and raising the pressure of the gas in the container in dependence upon the issued length. The machine comprises a mould 14 which is oscillatable in, and rotatable with, a sleeve 17 mounted for rotation in bearings 18, 19. The casting is withdrawn by rollers 24a, 24b and rotates with, and at the same speed as, the mould. The actuation of a limit switch 46 by the issuing casting not only initiates the operation of a saw 47 to cut-off a length of casting, but also energizes a magnet coil 52 which advances a ratchet wheel 64 by one tooth to relieve the spring loading the ball 62 in a pressure-reducing valve 56. The equilibrium of the ball is thereby upset and pressure gas flows through the valve from the chamber 70 to the molten metal container 1 to compensate for loss of pressure therein due to the lowering of the metal level. 75 is an excess pressure relief valve. The pressure in the chamber 70 is maintained substantially constant by means of a diaphragm 80, whose movement with variation of pressure operates contacts in an electrical circuit controlling a cut-off valve 90 between the chamber 70 and a high-pressure container 78.
