Abstract

944,141. Continuous casting-machines. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. June 7, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961], No. 22118/62. Heading B3F. Continuously cast metal is withdrawn from an upright fluid-cooled mould in a pattern of changing withdrawal rates to vary the molten metal level within the mould, while the mould is simultaneously axially reciprocated, preferably at a frequency greater than that of the variation in molten metal level. The casting is preferably withdrawn by a fast and slow withdrawal cycle as described in Specification 686,033, which is referred to and the mould is reciprocated by an eccentric drive mechanism within a fixed housing 48 with sliding seals 53, 54.
