Abstract

1,087,384. Continuous casting. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 16, 1966, No. 6837/66. Heading B3F. In apparatus for continuous casting a sealed container 12 enclosing a ladle 16 containing molten metal 22 has a cooled open-ended mould 28 with a graphite sleeve 32 mounted on the container. A pouring tube 26 communicates the mould with the molten metal and in operation molten metal is forced by air pressure from the ladle into the mould. The casting 42 formed in the mould is continuously withdrawn by roller means 44. To ensure a uniform supply of molten metal to the mould in relation to the rate of withdrawal of the casting, control means 58 is provided. This control means is operated in relation to the weight of molten metal in the ladle 16 by sensing means 18 on which the ladle is carried. The variation in weight of the molten metal is arranged to affect the pressure of air supplied to the container, the air pressure being inversely proportional to the weight of molten metal. Electrical circuits are described to indicate means of steplessly varying the air pressure in relation to the uniform supply of metal to the mould.
