Abstract

1,166,817. Continuous casting-machines. SOC DES ACIERS FINS DE L'EST. 26 Oct., 1966 [15 Nov., 1965], No. 47964/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C1] In a continuous casting machine liquid steel is fed from a ladle 1 down a refractory pipe 5 into an intermediate vessel 7 that has one or more discharge pipes 13 for feeding the liquid metal into one or more ingot moulds 14. Each pipe 5, 13 has its free end below a slag layer 8, 17 and immersed in the liquid metal in the vessel 7 and mould 14 respectively. Flow of liquid metal is controlled by stoppers 2, 22 that may be manually, servo-assisted, or automatically controlled by a device that detects the amount of liquid metal left in the intermediate vessel 7 to prevent the slag layer 8 being carried into the mould 14. The vessel 7 may be fed via pipe 12 with a non-oxidizing or reducing gas such as propane or coke oven gas. The pipes 5, 13 may be made from sintered porous vitreous silica material by making a mixture of the material in pulverulent form with water and an emulsifier, pouring it into a plaster mould, allowing a crust to form, discharging the excess mixture and drying and sintering the formed pipe. The pipe may be mounted direct to the ladle 1 and vessel 7 or be mounted on nozzles formed in the bottom thereof (Figs. 2-5, not shown). The slag layer 17 may comprise a fine layer of fusible synthetic slag and may be covered with heatinsulating graphite powder 38. The automatic control may comprise sensors for measuring the level of liquid metal in vessel 17 said sensors operating e.g. by gamma rays, electrical resistance strain gauges on springs 42, via relay and amplifying means to operate visual or aural signals. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the ladle (28) is mounted alongside the vessel 7 and is connected thereto by a pipe (27) such that by tipping the ladle up liquid metal is transferred to the vessel 7. The continuous casting machine includes water cooling sprays 36 and withdrawal rolls 18.
