Abstract
795,322. Swivelling-couplings; mechanical couplings for cable covering. SVENSKA AEROPLAN AKTIEBOLAGET. March 2, 1936 [March 9, 1955], No. 6589/56. Class 38 (1). A rotatable connection for a towing cable having a central conductor comprises a pair of relatively-rotatable and axially-aligned sleeves 6 having external flanges 10, 13 respectively at their inner ends. A sleeve 11 with an inwardly extending flange 12 screws on to flange 10 so as to embrace the end of the sleeve 6 carrying flange 13, and a ball-race is located between the flanges 12, 13. The sleeves 6 carry insulators 17, 18 which in turn carry contacts 19, 20 to which the conductors are connected and between which sliding contact is made by a spring plunger 22. The ends of the cable are gripped by members 24, Fig. 4, each consisting of a sleeve 25 into the ends of which plugs 32, 33 are screwed so as to compress soft-metal members 28, 29 between the cable and the sleeve. The latter may have a screw plug at one end only, the other end being closed except for an aperture for the cable (Fig. 5, not shown). Each member 24 is anchored to the connection, so that the towing strain is taken by the sleeves 6, by inserting the head of one of the screw plugs in a recess 23 at the outer end of the bore in one sleeve 6 where it is retained by a detachable cover 7. A rubber sleeve 16 encloses the bearing housing.
