Abstract
772,553. Winches. WARBURTON, R. E. L., and SANDFORD, W. H. Jan. 10, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3309/55. Class 78 (5). A portable winch comprises housing 10 for attachment at 11 to a support, a rope drum 12, a sleeve 14 having a screw-thread 18 and a clamping face 23 so that, by manual means, the sleeve takes a preliminary grip upon the rope and such that, if slipping of the rope occurs, the sleeve automatically tightens its grip. As shown, rope 15 passes through fairlead 36 and round drum 12 and out through fairlead 37, the drum being manually driven by handle 21 and worm 19, the latter engaging teeth 12B formed on the drum. The rope is clamped, to avoid slippage over the drum, by sleeve 14 which is screwed down over the drum and on to the rope by manual operation of cap 27, a spring 29 being provided to co-operate with stop 30 so as to limit the distance to which the sleeve can be unscrewed. A roller 35 guides the loose end of the rope on and off the drum, and a pawl 38 co-operates with projections 39 on sleeve 14 so that the sleeve can be held for withdrawal of rope.
