[Class 78 (v)] In a two-speed ratchet winch the operating pawl comprises a fork l spanned by a pin n which engages the teeth j of a ratchet wheel h fixedly mounted on the end of the winding drum d journaled loosely on a shaft g. The fork l is pivoted to a link o turning about a pintle.p on the winch frame a, and is furnished with a socket l<SP>1</SP> to receive an operating handle. The detent pawl k also is pivoted about the pintle p, and is controlled by a spring u positioned by a hand-rotated cam which brings the pawl k up against the teeth j or away clear of same. Two such pawls k may be provided, located so as to hold the wheel h at half-tooth positions. To permit of rapid rotation of the drum a supplementary pawl r mounted on a handle-socket q journaled on the drum shaft g is provided. The pawl r is pressed by a spring s through a slot y in the frame a to engage projections t extending laterally from the drum, and may be swung clear of the projections to allow of unwinding by pressing the socket q to the extreme right to cause the pawl to ride up the edge of the slot y. The rope before reaching the drum runs over a cross-beam having downwardly inclined ends which minimize a tendency to mount the flanges. The rope end passes through a key-hole slot in the drum face and is retained therein by a wedge inserted between the rope strands, the rope being imprisoned in the narrow end of the slot by a plate bolted in position.
