Abstract

1278935 Winches SAMUEL LEWIS (WINCHES) Ltd 11 July 1969 [17 July 1968] 33932/68 Heading B8B A collapsible hauling apparatus (Fig. 2) comprises a housing 1 containing a winch for a hauling cable A, a tension gripping member 2A adjustably attached to the housing and a cable guiding member 9 pivotable about the housing and angularly lockable in one of a plurality of positions relative to the member 2A such that a pulley 25 on the member 9 exerts a downward force on the cable when the apparatus is erected and operating. The tension gripping member 2A is mounted on an integral extension 3 of the housing 1, the member 9 being pivotal at 6 to the housing 1 and being spaced from the extension 3 by a support strut 19 which may be selectively pinned to one of three apertures 26 in the member 9. The cable A passes between two pulleys 24, 25 mounted in a pulley housing 21 pivoted to the end of the member 9. An extensible steadying arm 13 is pivoted at 14 to the housing 1 and for operation is selectably positioned relative to the extension 3. In the inoperative condition, the arm 13 and the guiding member 9 are pivoted towards the extension 3 and locked in positions parallel therewith. The winch (Fig. 4) in the housing 1 comprises a cable drum 29 driven through ratchet wheels 30 thereon and a hauling pawl 36 actuated by a handle 18, the wheels 30 being locked by a pawl 39 when not driven by the pawl 36, and both pawls being spring biased into engagement with the ratchet wheels 30. Pay out of cable A under tension is facilitated by a time delay member 33 including a spring piston and cylinder arrangement coupled by a rod 46 to a lever 41 pivoted at 30a to the same axle as the hand lever 18. When the member 33 is spring gripped to a projection 52 on the handle 18, projections 44, 45 on the free end of the lever 41 are sequentially engageable with the pawls 36, 39 to lift the same clear of the ratchet teeth once the force from the teeth, on the appropriate pawl, has been relieved. The pay out is controlled by clockwise movement of the handle 18 during which the pawl 36 is in engagement with the ratchet wheels 30 and the pawl 39 is held out of engagement therewith by the projection 45, the pawl 39 engaging the wheel 30 and the pawl 36 being held out of engagement therewith by the projection 44 during anti-clockwise movement of the handle 18. The member 33 may be pivoted into an inoperative position in which it spring grips a part 55 of the housing 1 and the pawl 36 may be rendered inoperative by hooking an extension thereof on to the housing 1 at 58.
